We were invited to work with the Hillcrest Charity in June 2010. We have spent a year fundraising with the support of all at Swakeleys, to fund our 3 week visit to South Africa in which we taught in 2 Primary Schools to children who have been affected by HIV/AIDS.
It was such an eye opening experience as we worked very closely with the children, both at Lamula and Inchanga. The children were always really enthusiastic and eager to learn, as well as their teachers, who often joined in too! We taught netball, football, volleyball and rounders and when the weather was against us, literacy and chess! We also worked with the Inchanga sports teams in football and netball and held a fixture against another school, a first for Inchanga! not only that, but our teams all won too! The Headteacher is determined that this work will continue, alongside after school chess which we set up.
On our last day at each school we presented a range of equipment to them so that they could continue with the work we have started and the children performed traditional dances in return which were really entertaining! Both Headteacher's also gave thank you speeches to us - the Headteacher from Inchanga said, "what you have done in a week feels like a year to us!"
Overall, it was a truly life changing experience and we really hope that we are able to keep in contact with the children we taught. We are extremely grateful to have had this opportunity and realise just how different life can be - despite really tough school and home conditions the children are just so polite, keen to learn and overall, so happy!
