Wonderful workshops

Our Dr Margaret Turnbull is back in South Africa. Over the past few weeks she has been busy running behaviour management training workshops with school teachers and principals in and around the Valley of 1000 Hills.

“The aim of the behaviour management training for educators is to draw out the positive in each child while teaching behaviour,” Dr Turnbull says. “It is about celebrating the child’s success when they behave well while enabling the child to manage its own behaviour in a positive and constructive environment.”

One of the workshops included Peer Education and Life Skills educators from our partners the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust in South Africa. These educators spend their time running peer education classes for high school pupils across the Valley of 1000 Hills, a region where HIV infection rates are up to 40% and where poverty is rife.

The pupils learn how to be good role models to their peers. They are taught about HIV and AIDS and health, drug and alcohol addiction prevention, and are given career guidance. They then use these skills and the knowledge they have gained in their classes to educate their peers in school and in the community. Life Skills education takes place in primary schools and enable children to live positive and healthy lifestyles.

Dr Turnbull has many years of experience in education as a teacher and head teacher in the UK and as an education adviser in South Africa. Her training and workshops have a lasting impact on the lives of both teachers and children.

To help us continue to run and develop these vital training workshops please donate here.

After every long day of work I would come home and look at myself in the mirror before a shower and say “your one step closer to building a better society.” I honestly think that if you really want to make a change you need to start from the roots. The roots, in this case, were the little kids we worked with and interacted with.
