Rural Township Pupils Visit

In December 2008, a group of 16 pupils were taken on a two day safari to an educational camp in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. This was a reward for the pupils’ efforts and achievements at the end of their final year at primary school. For most this was despite extreme and difficult circumstances.

In 2011 due to the growing costs of the safari, the trip was moved to Spirit of Adventure Leadership Camp in Shongweni – and we have continued to go there ever since.

As well as being huge fun, the camps provide exciting leadership and team building activities that aim to inspire and equip young people for the adventures and challenges of progressing to high school and life beyond.

The pupils are given the opportunity to take part in activities such as rafting, sailing, obstacle courses, rock climbing, abseiling, and lots of group leadership tasks and challenges. All of these include life-skills such as; teamwork, facing your fears, building confidence and encouraging others. As the students come from several different schools, getting to know one another adds to the exciting experience of the camp.

Most children from townships in South Africa are never exposed to this sort of experience, so when the  opportunity does arise it really is very special. This is what one student said about the camp, “I hope the programme can continue so many children can experience what we’re experiencing now.”

Only with further funding can this wish become a reality!

I’ve learnt to never give up, that a group of highly motivated and genuine people can make a big change in people’s lives.
