Obed Mlaba Technical School

Since 2016, we have been involved in the development of a new Technical School in the Inchanga region of the Valley of 1000 Hills, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa. This included the design and building of two new classrooms, which started in 2021 and completed in July 2022. The aim was to create additional space as the school numbers grow, to reduce class sizes, which often top 60-90 pupils. The two classrooms are now happily used by the pupils who are benefitting greatly from the additional space. And now more classrooms are being built.

The building of the classrooms was made possible thanks to the amazing donations made by our supporters and two companies local to the school.  One company donated the blocks for the buildings, and another company provided the corrugated iron for the roofs.  In addition, one of our wonderful partner charities, Lionsraw, employed and supervised local workers who undertook the building works.

Once the classrooms were complete, one of the KZN schools we partner with – Kloof High School – was approached by Kloof Rotary club to donate desks and chairs for the classrooms, so it has been an excellent team effort all round.

The cost of the two classrooms was £23,620.00, with £15,570.00 funded via Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust UK and £8,050.00 (the cost of labour) funded by Lionsraw.

As the school has gone from strength to strength and continues to grow, the building of more classrooms has been necessary. Thanks to the generosity of some of our major donors, work began on two more of these in November 2023.

We are truly grateful to everyone who has been involved.

With most of the building work and sports fields completed for now, we have turned our attention to providing funds for teaching staff. There is a huge deficit of funding for teachers in township schools. Currently we are helping with the wages of several teachers at the school.

It (the project) has given me the desire to be helpful and charitable towards others because I am so privileged compared to the children.
