Introducing our dedicated chair of trustees…

November 25, 2020

“Hello, I am Fr Gwyn, an Anglican priest and I have been a Trustee of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust UK since its inception. I remember one warm afternoon when I visited Margaret Turnbull who told me about her visits to South Africa and her ambition to make a contribution to the lives of children through supporting their education and home life. Having a background in education would be an advantage for me as a Trustee so I gladly accepted her invitation to join her and other Trustees in raising awareness of the needs of children and overseeing the organisation’s yearly visits of pupils from this country to the schools in South Africa, which was part of the programme back then. The pupils from this country also benefited enormously from their own commitment and enthusiasm.

Although I have not visited South Africa, I have appreciated the work done by the charity in encouraging students and staff in the South African township and village schools and the exchanges between better-resourced and under-resourced schools so the pupils can interact with each other and learn. I think for all the students involved their lives have been enriched and for some it has been a life-changing experience.

During my work as a Vicar and Area Dean I have had the opportunity of raising the awareness in church congregations and schools about the needs of the students in South Africa and what a difference this charity makes to their lives and to the communities in which they live.

Other facts about me – as a bit of fun I was asked to name my favourite food for this post. As I do not eat meat the choice is more limited than for most people. Suffice to say, like many people, I love the food I should not eat!

Thank you all for supporting this wonderful charity.

Father Gwyn”
