Principals’ training: planning for the new school year

January 2, 2022

During her latest visit to South Africa Margaret was asked to lead some in-depth training with a group of 20 primary school principals.

Margaret worked with Yvonne Johnstone, a retired primary principal from Durban, to prepare a training programme that focused on the issues that principals needed to consider while planning for 2022. Many of the schools involved in the training face huge challenges, from lack of resources and very large classes to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the school year in South Africa begins in January, the end of October was the perfect time to deliver this training.

The topics covered were:

  • The importance of developing good relationships within the school
  • Setting school goals that everyone shares and contributes to
  • Curriculum planning and delivery
  • Effective use of resources
  • Differentiation and classroom management to ensure all learners remain engaged
  • How to write a policy and implement it
  • Timetabling and forward planning

The session lasting just over 1 ½ hours was well received with the feedback from the attending principals ranging from good to excellent. Here are some of the comments taken from the participant evaluation forms:

“Lovely to get such good ideas to take back to our schools”

“Very informative and will help with the planning for the upcoming year”

“Thank you, we appreciate the presentation it was very informative”

“Good practices shared, will assist me in improving my management skills”

“Very informative workshop, it touched on topics that are the core of leadership”

“A wonderful workshop which gave us more insight as we embark on planning for 2022”

The project was definitely what I expected it to be, it was hard at times but the smiles on the learners faces was a priceless reward for all the hours put in.
