Kwanele’s first year at university has been a transformative experience, filled with personal growth, excellent academic achievement, and the forging of new friendships. Kwanele enrolled a year ago for a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Chemical Technology. Kwanele is one of several students who we supported though high school and we are proud to share his reflections on his first university year.
“When I think back to my first year in university, there were many specific events that made the experience enjoyable and fulfilling. One of the biggest highlights was getting to know new people from different backgrounds, and building friendships, which made the adjustment to university life easier.
From an academic point of view, I found joy in studying subjects, which I was genuinely interested in, and I enjoyed the flexibility that came with managing my own timetable. The engagement with student bodies and the participation in events also made the year far more interesting and active in feeling a part of campus life.
For distinct reasons, one of my most favorite memories remains the completion of my first practical test. It was a moment of excitement coupled with relief – I was capable of coping with academic weight and shifting into a different educational set up.
What was most troubling for me was time management. Sometimes mixing coursework, social life, and personal obligations proved to be very stressful. This was solved by sticking to a fixed routine, organising what needed to be completed, and asking for assistance where I saw fit.
Life for me has changed drastically since the commencement of college – I have learned to become self-sufficient, more responsible, and grasp opportunities.
For any university applicants, I recommend getting help, staying organised, and participating in school clubs or activities that will help them maximize their experience in such a space.
University is about more than just academics; it’s a chance to grow personally and socially. As I look forward to my second year, I’m excited about diving deeper into my studies, meeting new people, and taking on new challenges that will shape my future.”
