Amanda’s university journey: the challenges and triumphs

February 24, 2025

We are incredibly proud of Amanda, one of several students we sponsored through high school thanks to the fantastic support of our donors and the school. Now into her university studies in Industrial Chemistry for a Bachelor of Applied Science, Amanda’s wonderful first-year results, including a 77% average in her first semester, speak for themselves.

Hear directly from Amanda as she shares her experiences, challenges, and triumphs from her first year at university, her advice for other upcoming students, and what she hopes to achieve next.

“My first year at university has been a challenging yet, rewarding journey. I particularly struggled with being away from home for so long but regular check-ins with my family helped. One of my best highlights was getting an average of 77% for my 1st semester modules. I was able to make friends with people in my class which enabled me to have a solid study group and gave me a sense of belonging.

The second semester was particularly difficult, and the workload increased significantly compared to the first semester. I unfortunately lost my grandma during the second semester and had to travel back and forth between home and the student residence mid-semester, which made focusing on my studies a bit difficult.

Fortunately, because I had a strong support system, I was able to pass all modules even though there was a slight drop in my marks compared to the first semester. Even though being a university student has taught me to be independent and self-reliable, I have also learnt the importance of resilience, discipline and having a strong support system.

Moving forward, I aim to improve my consistency and explore more opportunities related to my field. My advice to aspiring students who want to attend university would be to be consistent with their studies and try to make friends with people in their class so they can have people to study with.

This year has shown me that while university is demanding, it is also an opportunity for growth, and I am determined to make the most of it.”

I would definitely say that I learned to appreciate what I have a lot more; to not take my school, my teachers or even flushing toilets for granted.
