We are so proud of Amanda, Neliswa and Kwanele, who achieved ‘Merit’, ‘Merit’, and ‘Outstanding’ respectively for their 2022 term 1 school reports. As a reward for their hard work, and to celebrate their achievements, our founder, Dr Margaret Turnbull, treated them to delicious burgers and milkshakes at the Spur restaurant in Durban.
The young learners faced many challenges last term, not least catching up after the COVID-19 pandemic, and then the devastating KwaZulu-Natal floods which led to hundreds of lives lost, families left homeless, and schooling and transport disrupted across the province.
“The flooding made it really difficult to meet up with the young people we sponsor,” Margaret explained. “Their school was closed for a week due to damaged water pipes. But persistence paid off, and we managed to meet one Saturday. We had lots of fun and it was lovely to see each other again,” Margaret reports.
The next big challenge is the cost-of-living crisis which is making itself felt across South Africa, where existing unemployment and poverty rates are already high.
We are really proud of Amanda, Neliswa and Kwanele who, despite all these obstacles, are determined to work hard and push through to get the education they want and deserve.
We would like to extend a big thank you to all our donors who fund the students’ education and equipment costs – your support is making a huge difference to their education.
