Fun and friendship, working together

January 5, 2023

One of our best events of 2022 was the hugely popular Spirit of Adventure camp, which saw 12 primary school students from different schools have their first ever experience of camp. For some of them, it was their very first time away from home. The students were chosen to take part, as a reward for their hard work and academic achievement during the school year. The camp, which took place over two days in November was filled with fun, friendship and laughter.

“What I realised is that life is better when we are together” – Anelisa

While there, these young learners took part in many exciting leadership and team building challenges, from abseiling and rock climbing, to navigating tricky obstacle courses, and fun-packed group activities in the water.

“What assisted me is that I had all the support of my team” – Kwanele

To make it all happen, we had the pleasure of partnering with two fantastic South African charitable organisations – the Spirit of Adventure and our sister charity, Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust SA (HACT SA). The camp was led by HACT SA’s Pemla Mtshali and Lady Love. Pemla Mtshali works with HACT SA’s education programmes in primary schools, while Lady Love focuses on their programmes in secondary schools.

In between all the activity, mealtimes were always a big win – the first of which was a hearty breakfast at HACT SA’s ‘Ubuntu Ground Café’ with everyone tucking into toast, sausages, and bacon, followed by a really scrumptious ice cream treat!

It (the project) has given me the desire to be helpful and charitable towards others because I am so privileged compared to the children.
