Important news from the Board of Trustees

June 29, 2026

Dr Margaret Turnbull teacher training at Charles Hugo Primary School, KZN, South Africa

It is with the greatest sadness that we have to announce the death of our wonderful founder and Trustee, Dr Margaret Turnbull. She passed peacefully from this world on Saturday 27th June.

Although we knew she was unwell, the end came very quickly and suddenly. We are in a state of shock.

But her greatest wish was for her legacy to live on, and to that end, the charity continues to support the projects so dear to Margaret’s heart. This includes the students who we have committed to sponsoring through their high school education.

Margaret’s energy and dedication blessed so many people in the Valley of 1000 Hills, across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond in the country she loved and called her second home – South Africa.

Today we grieve with you and yet we also rejoice with you as we witness the ongoing impact of her work and her friendships. This extends to her work for the charity and deep connections in the United Kingdom.

We will be posting more information in the days and weeks to come.

Should you wish to provide a personal tribute, please contact us on: support@hillcrestaids.org.uk

Thank you.

I would definitely say that I learned to appreciate what I have a lot more; to not take my school, my teachers or even flushing toilets for granted.
