Education. Opportunity. Equality. #IWD2026
March 8, 2026 – Today, the world pauses to celebrate International Women’s Day, and here at the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust UK, we are shining a light on the incredible potential of women and girls across the Valley of 1000 Hills, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
This year’s global theme, #GiveToGain, carries a profound message: giving to women’s education is not a zero-sum game. It is an “intentional multiplication” – a powerful catalyst where a single act of support yields a brighter, more equitable future for an entire society.
Breaking Barriers in Rural KwaZulu-Natal
Through our ongoing projects, we witness these “gains” every day – in the classrooms we build, the teachers we fund, and the determined young women we sponsor through high school and onto university. However, the path for girls and women remains fraught with structural challenges.
Our CEO, Dr Margaret Turnbull, highlights the reality facing many families in the rural townships where we work:
“We know that education for girls is just as important as it is for boys. But in South African rural townships, the boys often take priority. When a family must choose who receives transport money to get to school or a new school uniform, the boys are frequently given the opportunity over the girls.”
From Competition to Contribution
International Women’s Day serves as a vital reminder that we must move from a mindset of competition to one of contribution. By intentionally investing in a girl’s education, we are building the foundation for a more resilient community and a more robust South African economy.
Rebekka Stredwick, one of our Trustees, explains:
“The essence of #GiveToGain is the fact that an investment in education is a shared victory. When you sponsor a student’s fees or fund a school uniform, you give a young girl the dignity to step into her future; you are giving our teachers the power to gain a new generation of skilled female professionals for South Africa.”
How You Can #GiveToGain Today
Our goal for 2026 is simple yet bold: to ensure that no girl is left behind because she lacks the tools, the clothing, or the space to learn. We invite our global community to turn giving into a catalyst for change through two key initiatives:
- Sponsor a student: Directly fund a young learner under our mentorship. Your support covers essential education fees and provides the high-quality equipment needed for academic success.
- The gift of belonging: Provide a school uniform. This simple provision removes one of the most significant barriers to attendance and grants a student the confidence to walk into school with pride.
