So proud!

March 8, 2021

Lebo and Nompilo (photo credit Rebekka Stredwick)

The first 2 students who have been funded, supported and mentored through their secondary education out of the rural township education system, completed their Matriculation in 2020. And their results are through.

They both achieved a Bachelor Pass (the term used for a matriculation that achieves the standards required for university). In addition, Lebo received 5 distinctions, denoting a pass mark of over 80% in Isizulu, Maths Literature, Life Orientation, History and Drama. Nompilo achieved 2 distinctions, in Isizulu and Life Orientation.

Lebo, funded by us had attended Inchanga Primary and Nompilo, funded by Lionsraw had attended Steven Davison Primary in the Valley below Inchanga. Both students obtained their secondary education at Hillcrest High School who also supported them by providing them a free place at the school, worth approximately £2,000.00 each per year for 5 years.

We are so very proud of their success and it is particularly wonderful to be posting this on International Women’s Day. They are the first girls in their community to have reached such a high academic level.

The achievements of these remarkable and talented young women were made possible by all the wonderful people who have helped provide funds through Hillcrest Aids UK, Lionsraw and Hillcrest High School – thank you all!

I absolutely loved teaching the pupils of the primary school English. It was a privilege to hear that they had dreams and longed for a greater life, despite their situation.
