Showing amazing dedication to their studies, the Grade 12 students of the Obed Mlaba Technical School, Inchanga, recently attended a two-week intensive study ‘boot camp’, at the end of their school term.
The aim of the camp was to ensure that the students achieve the marks they need for their Matriculation exams. The Boot camp was the idea of School Principal – Mr Mlondo Mengameli.
After consulting the school’s governing body, parents, staff and the students, Mr Mengameli organised the camp. It was originally planned to last one week but was then extended to two.
Once given the thumbs up, the students packed their bedding, nightwear, and school uniforms ready for intensive nine hours of study a day. The “boarding school” adventure was about to begin!
Each day, learning took place in three-hour sessions, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one in the evening. The teachers worked at different times and additional teachers were also present.
After visiting the Boot Camp to see how the students were getting on, our founder and trustee, Dr Margaret Turnbull reported, “The sessions…showed that the students were working very hard, and they said they were very pleased with the Camp,”.
Such intensive study requires a lot of energy and brain power. The students were provided with breakfast, lunch, and an evening meal, which included meat every day! This was a huge treat as meat is rarely affordable more than once a week, if that.
What a brilliant initiative! Well done to all involved and good luck to the year 12’s with your Matriculation exams.
